Chapter 05a
Night dim
Night dim is the automatic eye-comfort schedule: between local start and end hours the sign caps how bright the panel can get. The clock, countdown, and notifications stay visible — only the ceiling drops.
How it works
- Daytime:
display.brightness(and layer mix) set the nominal level — unchanged by night dim. - Inside the night window: output is capped at
display.night_dim_brightness, even if master brightness is higher. The cap applies on the next frame; no reboot required. - Hours are local — set timezone on theNetwork screen (or USB) first so 22:00 means your wall clock, not UTC.
- Wrap-aware windows — e.g. start
22and end6means 10 p.m. through 5:59 a.m. - Solar schedules — set
display.night_schedule_modetosunrise_sunsetorcivil_twilightand configure your home coordinates (location.lat/location.lon). Boundaries update daily; missing location falls back to the fixed hour keys. - Night warmth —
appearance.night_warmth(0–100) shifts colors toward amber during the night window without lowering master brightness again.
Settings
| Key | Meaning | Default |
|---|---|---|
display.night_dim_enabled | Master switch | false |
display.night_dim_start_hour | Local hour the night window begins (0–23) | 22 |
display.night_dim_end_hour | Local hour the night window ends (0–23) | 6 |
display.night_dim_brightness | Brightness ceiling while night dim is active (0–255) | 64 |
display.night_schedule_mode | fixed, sunrise_sunset, or civil_twilight | fixed |
appearance.night_warmth | Warm color shift during the night window (0–100; 0 = off) | 0 |
With appearance.theme=system, day/night palette selection can follow the same night-dim hour window. Brightness and color are separate axes — night dim is gain-only.
Enable from SoftAP
- Join B0rd-<suffix> or open the sign on your LAN.
- Open the Display page.
- Set Night dim to On, choose start/end hours and night brightness.
- Optional: adjust Night warmth (0–100) for an amber evening tint.
- Tap Save display — settings persist across a hard reboot.
USB equivalent:settings set display.night_dim_enabled true, set start/end/brightness keys, then settings save.
Night dim vs eco sleep
Night dim lowers brightness while the panel stays on.Eco sleep blanks the LEDs after inactivity and/or during a separate nightly quiet window. They are independent — use night dim for a dimmer bedside clock, eco sleep when you want the panel dark entirely.
When both overlap: asleep → blank; awake inside night-dim hours → the brightness ceiling still applies. SeeEco sleep.
